Évariste Galois (1811 - 1832) was a French mathematician best known for providing a criterion for solubility of equations by radicals. Galois theory, Galois groups, Galois extensions, and Galois fields are named after him.  His death (at the age of 20) which resulted from injuries in a dual, is one of the most tragic incidents of mathematics history.
