Jean-Baptiste le Rond d'Alembert (1717 - 1783) was a French mathematician best known in the context of 'ratio test' for determining the convergence of infinite series. His numerous attempts at providing a proof for 'fundamental theorem of algebra' has led many (particularly in France) to call this theorem as d'Alembert's theorem.
